Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Howard

Privacy & Security

Does Howard or its AI provider train models on my scripts? +

No.

Howard does not store, archive, or reuse your scripts beyond processing them for formatting and rewriting. Your scripts are not used to train AI models.

The AI that powers Howard runs through Anthropic's Claude API. When you submit a script:

  • Your content is processed only to generate Howard's output
  • It is not used to train or improve Anthropic's AI models
  • Anthropic's API terms explicitly state that API inputs and outputs are not used for model training
  • We do not retain your scripts anywhere in our system after processing

This means:

  • Your content stays private — it is not added to public datasets
  • Your scripts don't improve other models — they're processed and discarded
  • You can use Howard confidently in newsroom environments that require strict data boundaries

For additional security:

  • Encrypted in transit — All script data is encrypted between your browser and our servers, then to Anthropic
  • No long-term retention — Scripts are discarded immediately after processing

If you have enterprise security requirements (contractual safeguards, custom data retention policies, or compliance documentation), contact us to discuss your needs.

General

What is Howard? +

Howard is a newsroom-ready script assistant built specifically for TV and radio journalists, anchors, reporters, and producers. It helps you transform raw copy into broadcast-ready scripts, write teases, condense stories, and provides instant access to a pronunciation database with 20,000+ verified entries.

Think of Howard as your always-on desk assistant who never sleeps, never takes breaks, and is built by journalists who understand the pressure of tight deadlines and the importance of accuracy.

Is Howard safe for broadcast accuracy? +

Howard is designed as a tool for journalists, not a replacement. It generates script suggestions based on your input, but you always maintain editorial control and responsibility for fact-checking.

Our pronunciation database is manually curated from verified sources including official campaign websites, network style guides, and direct statements from public figures. We include source citations for major entries.

Best practice: Use Howard to speed up your workflow, but always verify facts, names, and pronunciations against your station's standards and trusted sources.

Does Howard write full stories? +

No. Howard helps you transform existing copy into broadcast-ready scripts. You provide the source material (wire copy, reporter notes, web copy, etc.) and Howard formats it for air.

Howard can:

  • Rewrite wire copy into conversational broadcast style
  • Condense long stories to hit specific time targets
  • Generate teases from your scripts
  • Suggest pronunciations for difficult names

Howard cannot generate original reporting, conduct interviews, or verify facts. That's your job as a journalist.

Does Howard remember my scripts? +

No. When you close the window, Howard forgets everything.

Your scripts are processed in real-time and never stored on our servers. This includes:

  • The original text you paste in
  • Howard's rewrites and suggestions
  • Any refinement requests ("make it shorter," "punchier lead," etc.)
  • The back-and-forth conversation during refinement

Once you close your browser tab, that session is gone. There's no history to retrieve, no archive to search, and no way for us to see what you were working on. This is by design — your newsroom's content stays yours.

The only things we track are anonymized usage metrics (how many rewrites, character counts, processing times) to manage quotas and improve the service. We never log your actual script content.

Technical note: To generate rewrites, your text is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic's Claude) for processing. Anthropic does not use API data for training, but may retain logs for safety monitoring per their privacy policy. This is standard for any AI-powered service — we've chosen providers with strong privacy commitments.

Do you share any user data? +

No. We do not sell, share, or distribute your scripts, story content, or usage data to third parties.

What we collect:

  • Basic account info (email, subscription tier)
  • Usage metrics (requests per month, for quota management)
  • Aggregated, anonymized analytics to improve the product

Your scripts and story content are processed temporarily and not stored long-term. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Enterprise & Custom Solutions

Can my station store local pronunciations? +

Yes, with Enterprise tier. We can create custom pronunciation databases for your station that include local officials, community leaders, place names, and regional pronunciations.

Your custom database syncs across your entire newsroom, so when one producer adds a pronunciation, everyone has access. This is especially valuable for:

  • Native American tribe names and reservation locations
  • Local political candidates and officials
  • Community business leaders
  • Regional place names and landmarks
  • School district names and local institutions

Is this replacing producers or reporters? +

Absolutely not. Howard is built by journalists for journalists to handle the repetitive, time-consuming tasks so you can focus on what matters: reporting, storytelling, and editorial judgment.

Think of it like spellcheck or autocorrect — nobody says those tools replaced writers. They just make writing faster.

Howard handles:

  • Formatting wire copy into broadcast style
  • Looking up pronunciations instead of searching Google
  • Condensing scripts to hit time targets

You still handle:

  • Editorial decisions and story selection
  • Fact-checking and verification
  • Original reporting and interviews
  • Storytelling and creative writing
Can we integrate pronunciation audio? +

We're exploring audio pronunciation features for a future release. Currently, Howard provides phonetic spellings (e.g., "YAH-nis an-teh-toh-KOON-boh" for Giannis Antetokounmpo).

If your newsroom has specific audio integration needs, contact us to discuss custom solutions.

Do you offer educational access? +

Yes! We offer special pricing for journalism schools, university news labs, and student newsrooms.

Educational access includes:

  • Discounted or free Pro tier access for students
  • Department-wide pronunciation database access
  • Training resources for instructors
  • Support for student-run newsrooms and broadcasts
